The Pomeranian breed has its roots in the region of Northern Europe, close to the Baltic Sea, called Pomerania.

The breed is the smallest cousin to the larger Spitz breeds used as sled dogs in the Arctic.

Several hundred years ago, the Pomeranian was developed from these larger sled dogs, and the breed continued to evolve until it became the small size that it is today.

Queen Victoria from England is often credited as making the Pomeranian breed famous.

While visiting Europe in 1888, she saw a Pomeranian dog and fell in love with it.

After bringing one back to England with her, the popularity of the breed significantly increased.

In fact, it is reported that her favorite Pomeranian, Turi, was present at Queen Victoria’s bedside when she died in 1901.

The United States fell in love with Pomeranian soon after England did, and the first Pomeranian specialty show was held in 1911.

Pomeranians descend from the ancient Spitz family of dogs.

Like their Spitz ancestors, they have many features to combat cold weather, including a thick coat, small ears, and a bushy tail to warm the nose when curled up sleeping.

Not much is known about how the Pomeranian evolved from the Spitz, except that the early Pomeranians were much larger than today’s, weighing around 30 pounds.

The Pomeranian comes from Pomerania, in what is now part of northern Poland and Germany.

They were eventually prized as pets through out Europe.

Some Pomeranian owners included Michelangelo, Mozart, and Isaac Newton.

Pomeranians were the first dogs to live in the then-new Buckingham Palace, moving in with Queen Charlotte in 1761.

In 1888, Queen Victoria, a Pom fancier, changed the size of the breed by importing what was then a tiny Pomeranian that weighed only 12 pounds.

The dog, Marco, set the trend for smaller Poms.

The Pom was not as popular in America as it was in Europe, but it was AKC recognized by 1900.

By the 1930s, it was one of the ten most popular breeds in America.

The hair around the anus must be checked daily for hygiene issues.

In fact, one of the biggest concerns with the Pomeranian is its small size.

It is also good to monitor closely the first several times your child interacts with your Pomeranian.

Like all dog breeds, Pomeranians are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia, two of the most common health issues among dogs.

Hip and elbow dysplasia occurs when the leg or hip becomes weakened, and it can result in arthritis or lameness if not addressed.

These little, toy-sized dogs have thick double coats, with fluffy and soft undercoats and shiny, straight and long hair on the outer coat.

Their plumed tails will lie flat and fan up across their backs.

Although the tails are a familiar characteristic of this breed, it actually takes several months for them to develop, and puppies are not born with fluffy tails.

They can be chocolate, tan, sable, blue, orange, black, white, cream, red, silver, grey, fawn, brown, or a combination of multiple of these colors.

They have wedge-shaped heads with erect and high set ears, and noses that are either dark or share the same coloring as the dog’s coat.

Pomeranians have dark eyes that are almond shaped and muzzles that are straight with well pronounced stops.

The teeth of a Pomeranian dog will meet in a scissors bite.

Pomeranian Breed Maintenance

An active Pom should be fed twice a day, and should get a total amount of ¼-½ cups of food.

Twice each week, a wire slicker brush and metal comb should be used to groom your pet.

You should ensure that you brush all the way from the skin in order to properly distribute the natural oils and to fully shed the undercoat.

To do this, you should start at the head and move down, parting the hair and brushing it forward using the comb.

Some people like to trim their Pomeranian’s fur around the ears, face, the hind end and feet, but this is not required.

They do not need to be bathed regularly, but can instead have baths as often as you’d like.

Dental hygiene and nail trimmings are also important for your Pomeranian.

Their teeth should be brushed daily, or once a week in the least.

Nails should be cared for as often as needed.

Pomeranians are an interesting breed when it comes to discussing allergens.

Their thick double-coat does release a lot of hair, but because they are so small, they don’t release a lot of loose hair IF they are brushed daily.

Pomeranian Suggested Exercises

Makes a lively and alert housedog.

Although many of its physical exercise needs can be met with indoor games, it still needs the mental stimulation of walking and sniffing outdoors.

A walk around the block once or twice daily will meet its outdoor needs, not counting bathroom breaks.

Many Poms have been trained to use indoor potty systems.

Dog parks are not generally a good idea unless only small dogs are allowed together.

Games and tricks provide needed mental exercise.

Excursions in doggy purses can also provide entertainment.

Its thick coat provides some protection against cold weather, but its small body size nonetheless makes it vulnerable to the cold.

Suggested Pomeranian Nutritional Needs

Pomeranians tend to stay in good weight.

The thick coat can sometimes obscure weight problems, so be sure to use your hands to feel.

Adult dogs should be fed a balanced diet, with restricted calories if the dog starts to gain too much weight.

Because of their small size, it takes only a little overfeeding or a few snacks to create an overweight dog.

Pom puppies should be fed often to prevent hypoglycemia, a serious condition to which very small puppies are prone.

Meals of high protein, fat, and complex carbohydrates may also help guard against this condition.

Care and upkeep

Although the breed is highly energetic, the Pomeranian’s small size means that its exercise needs can be met in a yard or even in an apartment if supplemented by daily leash walks.

The breed prefers temperate weather, neither excessively hot nor cold.

It enjoys playing games and will chase balls but may not return them.

Generally speaking, the Pom is not a water-loving breed.

Coat care normally requires brushing twice a week, though more often when the dog is shedding.

The coat is thick, with an especially dense undercoat that can shed profusely.

Pomeranians, especially those with extremely soft coats, can suffer from a painless disorder called alopecia X, or black skin disease.

It first appears as areas of hair loss, and the exposed skin may eventually turn black.

Affected dogs should wear shirts or sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

In addition, some Poms that have had their coat clipped may not regrow it, as the normal signals to shed and regrow hair are lost with clipping.

Pomeranians have a high incidence of patellar luxation, a dislocation of the kneecap.

Dogs suffering from this disorder often hop to avoid using the impaired leg.

Severe cases may require surgery.
